How Graphic Designers Miss Out on Great Income – What You Need to Know
By John Holland of JH Studios, Inc.
Are you a graphic designer desperate to find work? When you entered the industry, you may have heard tantalizing evidence that your income could be through the roof. If you are not yet experiencing such a quality in your career, that could be because you are missing out on great graphic design income opportunities. Have you ever considered that you can grow your business by partnering with a marketing supply company as a broker? Here is everything you need to know about the chances you are missing out on. As a graphic designer working without a marketing supply company, you work very hard at creating a logo for a customer. This is what your graphic design income is counting on! You conduct every facet of the design, working hard to generate creative advertisements and print work. At the end, your artwork gets handed over just so the customer can go somewhere else to get their advertising materials printed. This is extremely discouraging! Graphic artists can become a one-stop-shop without having to actually own a printing press by simply partnering as a broker with a marketing supply company that does it all. Some marketing supply companies can get you practically everything you need that is related to printing. This includes business cards, postcards, flyers, brochures, door hangers, pocket folders, sell sheets, rack cards, logo-imprinted promotional products to be used as trade show giveaways—all at broker pricing so you can make more money in the middleman position. If you prefer to not become involved as a middleman, there are still great graphic design income opportunities for you when you choose to partner with a marketing company. As long as they will provide you with what is called a "bird dog fee," you have everything you need to make the income you have been missing out on. A bird dog fee is a commission fee that you earn for referring someone to a business if it turns into a sale. This prevents you from being the middleman, but by simply referring your clients to the marketing supply company, they are sure to make a purchase and you earn your commission. Earning a bird dog fee is usually less profitable than the money you would make as a broker, but the effort is far less substantial. The only work you must do to earn this additional graphic design income is to make the referral and watch it turn into a sale.

Thank you for these useful tips. I'll refer this intel on to someone in this field.
Wow, "bird dog fee" is the type of jargon you could only hear from a real pro in the area. Nice intel.
I usually call it referral fee or finders fee, bird dog is a new one, but I can see how that name came about. I also get a commission from my hosting company for every customer who register a domain and hosting....

It must be a U.S. sales term. I picked it up back in '95 when I was in car sales. The dealer would encourage us to give bird dog fees of $100 to customers that brought us a qualified referral that led to a sale. The same way you'd give a treat to a dog that goes out and fetches you the bird you'd been hunting-- Hence the name "Bird Dog". The term stuck with me and appears to be widely used over here in sales (and no one looks at me weird when I say it, lol). Thanks for the input, everyone.
