Some of Your Competitors Will Be Going Out of Business!

By John Holland of JH Studios, Inc.

Great news! With the current state of the economy and many consumers tightening their belts-- Some of your competitors will be going out of business!

The bad news is... You may be joining them. Small businesses are struggling... It's all over the newspapers and local news channels... It's not difficult to determine which companies are going to survive this economic downturn and which companies will go down without a fight. The businesses that maintained their advertising budget (or even increased it) will be the businesses that prevail. The companies that cut their advertising budgets in an attempt to save money, if they do manage to survive, will be struggling just as bad when the economy gets better.

Advertising is the blood life of your business when it comes to getting new customers and maintaining your brand in the eyes of your existing customers. Your advertising budget should be the last thing that is cut when your business is struggling.

Instead of cutting your advertising budget you should be:

► Improving your online presence by getting a website and doing search engine optimization & social networking to increase your web traffic potential.

► Doing direct mail campaigns.

► Attending local chamber events and leads groups handing out business cards and flyers.

► Attending trade shows and handing out promotional products with your name on them.

► Teaming up with other businesses to share advertising costs.

► Television & radio advertising.

► Billboard Advertising.

► Cold Calling.

► Door Hanger distribution.

► Utilizing a variety Guerilla Marketing tactics.

► And whatever else it takes to keep your business products & services in the minds of not only potential customers but also your existing ones.

If you've been cutting your advertising budget, then I have only one question for you...

Will a "Going Out of Business" sign be the only advertising that your company does this year?

I sincerely hope not...

While this intel is obviously an advertisement, it's forceful and informative. Five stars!

Maybe I will just put up a sing "Gone fishing!" It is so much fun to be retired and to take off now and then on short notice...ah, but there are HUNDREDS of unread intel notification e-mails piling up in my inbox. I will tackle a few each day...this is not like work.

The word you are looking for is Guerilla. Gorilla are big beasts usually found in the jungles of central Africa. Guerilla marketing comes from the Guerilla tactics used in wars across the world. Basically it's a hit and run kind of warfare. Guerilla marketing is about getting seen where your competitors are without paying the big sponsorships.

Hit and run marketing may give you some exposure, but it points at you being cheap and willing to co opt someone elses marketing efforts, in other words a low life I'd rather not do business with.

I have 2 customers who sell shoes, 3 months ago one decided to spend his entire years advertising budget in one month on a campaign. The first months run was so successful that its allowed him to spend the same every month till December, and converse has decided to fund a large percentage of the spend as well. The other guy has had so many months of bad sales since the day he opened.
