The Importance of Antivirus and Spyware Protection in Business – Protecting Customer and Company Information

By John Holland of JH Studios, Inc.

If you own a home computer, you know how important it is to acquire antivirus programs and spyware protection on your computer. In the workplace, the importance is multiplied. This is because viruses can spread easily between computers on the same network without malware programs. Viruses are serious matters because they often result in the loss of essential information. The importance of installing and updating antivirus and spyware programs on your business computers is undeniable when you consider a few important points about protecting customer information and providing protection for business computers.

When it comes to antivirus programs, there is always a concern that data will be lost or stolen, which is disconcerting enough on your personal computer; however, consider the implications of losing your company's financial information or transaction history. Not only that, but your customer's information has the potential to be lost or compromised without spyware programs. You could be holding sensitive information in emails and accounting software on your company computers. You are responsible, as a business owner, to protect the information of your clients. When you install trusted antivirus and spyware software, keep those programs up-to-date, and scan your computers often, you accomplish your goal of protecting customer information.

Viruses spread faster than anything else on the internet. That is where they come from. If you work on a computer that does not have internet access, it will never need antivirus programs. However, most computers today are utilized because of their ability to access the web, but the internet is not the safe place everyone wishes it was. Did you know that you can get viruses even without visiting deficient or scam sites? Other than browsing the web, sending and receiving emails is a prevalent way to compromise the protection for business computers you have tried to set up. Without spyware programs, receiving emails with notifications of failed deliveries by popular parcel companies and opening attached files can bring on a virus.

You can avoid all the trouble of losing company and customer information by utilizing trusted antivirus programs. To keep up solid protection for business computers, do not open email from unknown senders, back up your files regularly, install antivirus and antispyware programs, and keep them updated. The investment is small compared to the nightmare that could very well happen if you do not have spyware programs installed for the purpose of protecting customer information.

Good advice, however I would like to add that you can never replace the protection of an experienced network technician, who can ensure your computers stay safer by employing the appropriate networking security and employee usage restriction. Educating staff and employees about the threats that are present can reduce the overall infection risk. Never rely on software alone!

I agree. I can only cover so much in one article and the efforts to protect a computer from compromise are seemingly limitless. We should also throw hardware in to the mix as well. Thanks for the feedback, Puniksem. I appreciate it.

You are right. It's also important to back up your data. There is software available that can do this to a secure location literally as you go...
